AlarisPro Launches new Mobile Application for their Operations and Fleet Management Software

Newly Released Mobile Application Allows UAS Fleet Management from Remote Field Locations.  

XPONENTIAL 2019 - CHICAGO, Illinois — AlarisPro announces the launch of their new mobile application that allows clients to log UAS flights in remote locations. The mobile app is available to Apple and Android users on Google Play and the App Store. 

“Off-line logging is a requirement for our clients operating in remote locations supporting missions such as utility surveys, Search and Rescue (SAR), fire surveillance, agricultural mapping, and more” says AlarisPro President Tony Pucciarella. “The new AlarisPro mobile application allows our clients to log their flights on their smart phone without a need for cell coverage or a network connection. The flight logs are automatically synched to their AlarisPro account when their phone regains a connection,” says Pucciarella.  

Clients can now access their pilot status, UAS status, and see alerts from AlarisPro and their manufacturers. Common entries such as the date, location, UAS flown, and custom fields can be “pinned” so there’s no need to re-enter them on subsequent flights. “This makes entering precise operational data something that can be done in seconds.” says Pucciarella.

AlarisPro Serves Critical Role in Historic Unmanned Aircraft Delivery of Organ For Successful Kidney Transplant

Baltimore – April 26, 2019– AlarisPro supports world’s first unmanned aircraft system (UAS) delivery of a viable human organ. In a first-ever advancement in human medicine and aviation technology, a University of Maryland unmanned aircraft has delivered a donor kidney to surgeons in Baltimore for successful transplantation into a patient with kidney failure. This successful demonstration illustrates the potential of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for providing organ deliveries that, in many cases, could be faster, safer, and more widely available than traditional transport methods.

The momentous flight was a collaboration between transplant physicians and researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in Baltimore; aviation and engineering experts at the University of Maryland (UMD); and collaborators at the Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland (The LLF).

The entire project was supported by AlarisPro’s detailed reliability and operations data which was highlighted as serving a critical role in the success of the final flight which included the delivery of a kidney that was successfully transplanted hours after the UAS landed. All flight operations and maintenance actions were documented using AlarisPro’s detailed Operations and Fleet Management Software. As with any large complex project, issues were encountered. This project however benefited from the detailed issues tracking feature of AlarisPro that helped researchers mitigate risks and improve their design and operational procedures – thereby improving mission success. 

“This project required a reliable UAS platform with reliable components to ensure mission success. AlarisPro was key in helping us monitor component, system, and operational reliability throughout the design process, testing, and ultimately the successful mission,” said Matthew Scassero, Director of UMD’s UAS Test Site, part of the Clark School of Engineering.

Maryland faculty and researchers believe this prototype organ transport blazes a trail for the use of UAS to expand access to donated organs, improving outcomes for more people in need of organ transplants.

“As a result of the outstanding collaboration among surgeons, engineers, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), organ procurement specialists, pilots, nurses, and, ultimately, the patient, we were able to make a pioneering breakthrough in transplantation,” said Joseph Scalea, MD, assistant professor of surgery at UMSOM, project lead, and one of the surgeons who performed the transplant at UMMC.

“This history-making flight not only represents a breakthrough from a technological point of view, but provides an exemplary demonstration of how engineering expertise and ingenuity ultimately serve human needs – in this case, the need to improve the reliability and efficiency of organ delivery to hospitals conducting transplant surgery,” said Darryll J. Pines, Ph.D., dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering and Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering. “As astonishing as this breakthrough is from a purely engineering point of view, there’s a larger purpose at stake. It’s ultimately not about the technology; it’s about enhancing human life.”

In Medical First, Drone-Delivered Organ Used In Successful Transplant

A kidney transplant patient at the University of Maryland Medical Center last week became the first in the world to have her new organ delivered by drone.

The flight, which took place just after midnight on April 19, carried a donor kidney 2.6 miles from St. Agnes Hospital in Catonsville. The patient successfully received the organ later that morning.

Dr. Joseph Scalea, an assistant professor of surgery and director of the organ-drone lab at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said that through his personal experiences in surgery he became frustrated with the plodding pace at which organs were routinely transferred. With hopes of expediting the process, Scalea began working with a group of researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center three years ago, ultimately constructing the underpinnings of the organ-transporting drone that assisted its first successful surgery last week.

The drone advancement, combining human medicine and aviation technology in a brand-new way, is expected to make organ deliveries faster, safer, and more widely available than other transportation methods are capable of, Scalea said.

Researchers also worked with the Boston company AiRXOS, a subsidiary of GE Aviation. That company's software platform monitored the flight.

“This flight demonstrated how air mobility can transform the delivery of medical care in ways that can have significant impact on lives," AiRXOS CEO Ken Stewart said in a statement. "It lays the foundation for future advanced drone operations."
